Written by (AP) Tuesday, 22 February 2011 01:25

Cornelius Hester scored 24 points, most of which came off six 3-pointers, as Alabama A&M defeated Southern University 64-45 on Monday night.

The Bulldogs (12-11, 9-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) led 23-19 at halftime, but stretched their advantage to double digits on a 10-0 run fueled by Casey Cantey early in the second half. Cantey scored five of his 18 points during the spurt, which ended with Alabama A&M ahead 40-25 with 14:40 left.

The Jaguars (4-23, 3-12) worked the deficit back into single digits once — on Marceis Davis' 3-pointer with 10:17 left — but Cantey answered with a jumper 41 seconds later. Southern lost its eighth in a row, with nobody scoring in double figures.

Hester made 9 of 21 shots, including 6 of 16 from 3-point territory, as the Bulldogs avenged a 64-52 loss to Southern on Jan. 22 — the Jaguars' last victory.
